The Garcia House on Silver Lake Road — Cedar That Had Never Been Primed
In 2021 the Garcias called me about their 1978 home on Silver Lake Rd in the Silver Lake neighborhood. Original cedar T1-11 siding, never properly primed. The north face was black with algae and showing heavy tannin bleeding where moisture had worked through the wood grain. Two previous painters had painted over it without an oil primer and the paint had peeled both times within three years.
My process: pressure wash with 30-Second Outdoor Cleaner concentrate, then let the siding dry for five days. Everett had a rain window that week and I built that wait into the schedule rather than rushing. After the five days, I spot-treated all remaining algae areas with diluted bleach solution and let that dry before touching anything. Oil-alkyd primer coat on every cedar surface — not just the north face, all four sides. Then two coats of SW Emerald Exterior in Aleutian SW 6241, a medium blue-gray that read well against the Silver Lake treeline.
The north face that had been black with algae came out clean. As of the last time I drove past, it has stayed that way. That\'s what proper prep on cedar produces.

The main watch-out is caulking around joints and penetrations, which degrades faster than the paint and needs replacement on most 15–20-year-old fiber cement homes.
