The Hoffman House in Kingsgate — 18-Foot Vault, Three Days
In 2023 I got a call from the Hoffmans on NE 132nd Street in the Kingsgate neighborhood — a 1990s two-story with an 18-foot vaulted ceiling in the living room. The previous painter had used a 3/8-inch nap roller on that vault and left heavy stipple marks across every surface. The Hoffmans had lived with it for two years before deciding they couldn\'t ignore it anymore.
My fix was straightforward but slow: I used a 1/2-inch nap roller on the vault and back-brushed immediately after each section to flatten the texture before it tacked. You cannot do this in big sections — you roll maybe four feet, then back-brush, then move on. Two coats of SW Ceiling Bright White on the vault, two coats of SW Duration in Agreeable Gray (SW 7029) on the surrounding walls, and Emerald Urethane on all trim including the stair rail and second-floor landing. I also knocked out three days of drywall repairs — nail pops on almost every second-floor wall from normal framing settlement.
Total: three days. The stipple marks are gone. The Hoffmans texted me a photo when afternoon light hit the vault and it was smooth edge to edge.
