The Somerset Hill Open-Plan Color Challenge
In 2021 I was called to a 4,200 sq ft newer build in Somerset Hill — the Chen family. They had three rooms they wanted in different color families: a warm putty in the living room, a cooler sage in the kitchen/dining area, and a soft blue-gray in the home office that opened off the kitchen. All three spaces were visible from one another in the open-floor plan, and the home had mixed lighting — south-facing windows in the living room, a north-facing kitchen, and east exposure in the office.
I spent half a day at the house before purchasing a single gallon. I tested four putty options in the living room, three sage variants in the kitchen, and two blue-grays in the office. We looked at all of them simultaneously at morning light, midday, and with overhead lights on. Two of the original choices had to be replaced — they looked right in isolation but fought each other across the visual field.
The palette we landed on was cohesive. When you moved through the space, each room felt distinct but not disconnected. No redos. The Chen family said it was the first time the house felt like it belonged to them rather than like a model home someone had lived in.

What Interior Painting in Bellevue Actually Involves
Color testing before purchase
Paint chips are unreliable. In large open-plan Bellevue homes especially, a color that looks right on a 2-inch chip can look completely wrong on a 12-foot wall under mixed lighting. I test large samples — 18 inches by 24 inches minimum — on the actual walls before any paint is purchased. This step prevents the most expensive mistake in interior painting.
Surface preparation
Holes filled, cracks taped, nail pops set and spackled. In older Bellevue homes, we assess for moisture near exterior walls before painting. Sheen transitions are confirmed with the homeowner — eggshell on walls, semi-gloss on trim, flat on ceilings — before any application begins.
Two-coat application with dry time
Interior paint requires full dry time between coats — usually overnight for alkyd topcoats and 4 hours minimum for latex. We never rush second coats. Adhesion failures and sheen inconsistency are almost always caused by inadequate dry time between coats.

What Bellevue Homeowners Say
"Open-plan house in Somerset Hill — three color families that had to work together. Antonio spent half a day testing samples before we bought anything. The palette he landed on is exactly right. Every room feels like itself but the house reads as one coherent space."
Michael & Susan C. — Somerset Hill, Bellevue
"Clyde Hill home, 3,400 sq ft interior repaint. Antonio found two walls that had moisture from a window seal we did not know was failing. He pointed it out before painting — we fixed the window, then he painted. That saved us from painting over a problem that would have ruined the finish within a year."
James & Amy T. — Clyde Hill, Bellevue
"Whole-house interior, Eastgate, 2,800 sq ft. Finished in 5 days, no smell by evening of each day (low-VOC paint throughout). Every cut line is clean. The trim looks like it came from a factory. I have had three contractors in this house over the years — Antonio is in a different category."

Do you handle large open-plan homes in Bellevue?
Yes — this is a specialty. I test large color samples in the actual rooms under actual lighting before any paint is purchased. Open-plan color coordination requires seeing all zones simultaneously in the same light conditions, not evaluating each room in isolation. This prevents the most common open-plan mistake: colors that look right on chips but fight each other in the space.
What paint do you use for Bellevue interiors?
Sherwin-Williams Emerald Interior or Benjamin Moore Aura Interior for walls — both zero-VOC with superior hide. Benjamin Moore Advance water-based alkyd for trim. Mold-resistant formulas in bathrooms and laundry rooms. Paint selection is matched to each surface and use case.
